Kick-start

Three months after you first join KiwiSaver, the government pays a $1,000 kick-start to your KiwiSaver Account.  This applies whether you are a child, self-employed, employee or non-employee. This is currently paid tax free.

MTC's - member tax credits

If you are 18 or older and under your KiwiSaver Retirement Age, the government will pay to your KiwiSaver Account, at the end of each year (1 July to 30 June), a subsidy known as a MTC (member tax credit).  The subsidy is $1 for each $2 you saved during the year, up to a maximum of $521.43. Note: in your first and last years, a proportionate MTC is paid.

The MTC's is currently paid tax-free until 1 April 2012.  After that date it is taxable.
